Iran War Live Updates: Israel Says It Has Killed Iran’s De Facto Leader

Ali Larijani, Iran’s top security official, was killed in an overnight strike, the Israeli military said. His death would deal another severe blow to Iran’s power structure.

In response to a question about Kent’s resignation, Trump told reporters at the White House that he always believed Kent was a “nice guy” but “weak on security.”

“It’s a good thing that he’s out,” the president said.

Earlier today, one White House official told MS NOW they believe this could lead to a pattern of other administration officials stepping away from their roles to protest the war with Iran.

Another White House senior official said they were shocked by the resignation and noted the rarity of a public one of this kind.

A third White House official said Kent did not have “power or influence” despite being the director of the National Counterterrorism Center and encouraged other critics of the war in Iran to swiftly exit the administration.

All three White House officials were granted anonymity to speak candidly about internal dynamics.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrated his country’s killing of Ali Larijani and Gholam Reza Soleimani, calling the Revolutionary Guard a “group of gangsters that effectively runs Iran.”

“We are undermining this regime in the hope of giving the Iranian people an opportunity to remove it,” Netanyahu wrote on X, characterizing the war as a catalyst for change for the Iranian people. “It will not happen all at once, and it will not happen easily. But if we persist, we will give them the chance to take their destiny into their own hands.”

Iran has not confirmed the deaths.

Netanyahu said he spoke with Trump on Monday and that their two countries will remain in lockstep to keep pressure on the Iranian regime, adding that “there are many more surprises” to come.
